Members’ Achievements

Congratulations to the following member on his achievements:-

Global Upline Sdn Bhd (DATUK MOHAMAD DANEL ABONG, MD, VCE-9) on the opening of the Runway Extension of the Kuching International Airport, Sarawak and the Grand Opening of Hotel Four Points by Sheraton in Kuching.

Both Ceremonies were officiated by Y.A.B. Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 17 June 2009.

Details of the project Redevelopment of Kuching International Airport can be found at http://www.globalupline.com/aboutus.html. The existing Kuching International Airport, located about 8km from Kuching City centre is being upgraded for unrestricted operation of Boeing 747 aircraft. The major works involve in the redevelopment include extension of main terminal building as well as the existing runway and taxiway.

The Runway Extension is part of this massive project of Contract Price about RM 800 million. The project started in July 2004 and is scheduled to be completed in December 2009.

The Hotel Four Points by Sheraton in Kuching costs over RM200 million. The construction of this 12-storey 400+ rooms hotel started in February 2008 and started operations in March 2009. Owned by Global Upline Hotels & Resorts Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Global Upline Sdn. Bhd., the hotel is managed by Starwood International Hotels & Resorts Inc. which own and managed hotel properties under the brand name Sheraton, Westin, Le Meredien, etc.

The Four Points is the newer brand under the Starwood Group and the one in Kuching is the first in South East Asia and the biggest Four Points Hotel in the world. The website for the hotel is:

Q2 2009 Vistage-MIER CEO Confidence Index

After falling eight straight quarters, the Vistage-MIER CEO Confidence Index rose 19.6 points quarter-on-quarter to settle higher at 67.2 points in 2Q09. Year-on-year, however, it is lower by 15.7 points. The same can be said for some indicators in the world’s largest economy. Read for more in: http://www.vistage.com.my/ceo-confidence-index/

Vistage China CEO Visits Malaysia

The CEO of Vistage China, Benjamin Lan, based in Shanghai, will be visiting Kuala Lumpur from19-22 August 2009. He will be meeting up with Richard Wong, Chairman of Vistage Malaysia and the office team. During Benjamin’s visit, he will get an opportunity to observe a Group, learn about the operations of Vistage Malaysia as well as engage in discussions and exchange ideas about the effectiveness of the Vistage model in different parts of Asia.

In the current tough times where we should be seen as getting closer to our customers, Chairman Richard Wong is visiting all VCE & VEE groups to listen and have dialogue with our members on how well they are enduring the economic crisis and listen to their views on any other matters. Richard will value add by doing a resource session on either What Really Works -4+2 Formula for Success OR What is a Leader besides conducting the exercise on “10 Criteria for High Performance Group”.

Laboratory Solutions

The bioanalytical laboratory of Info Kinetics had been regarded by many as a “Platform for Possibilities”. Info Kinetics’ proud moment is its achievement of OECD GLP accreditation, the first in Asia to do so.

The laboratory is well equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instruments that provide rapid turn-around time. These equipments include LC-MS-MS, LC-MS, GC-MS and HPLCs which are strictly qualified under vendor IQ/OQ protocols. The laboratory has experience to handle a variety of biological matrices, utilizing various sample clean-up procedures, including solvent and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Vistage Malaysia 15th Anniversary Commemorative Book (1994 – 2009)

In conjunction with Vistage Malaysia’s 15th anniversary celebration, Vistage Malaysia will be coming out with a Commemorative Book. Objective of the book is two-fold:

  1. As a platform to showcase the local Vistage community.
  2. As a commemorative book chronicling the 15 years milestones of Vistage Malaysia.

A cross section of members in different industries to be featured in the book where they will have the opportunity to share their Vistage experiences in increasing their effectiveness as business leaders and enhancing their personal lives.

A photo gallery will also be in place where a photo each of all the current VCE, VEE, KEY and TA groups will appear in the book. Group photos can be in different settings such as group meetings, retreats or social outings.

We target to launch the 15th Anniversary Commemorative Book on 14 January, 2010 to coincide with a Tea Talk on “Future Markets” by Dr. Pero Mecic. An Editorial Committee comprising of Chairs, staff and an editor, have been entrusted with the production of the book. All Vistage Chairs, members and international partners will get a complimentary book as Vistage Malaysia’s year-end gift.

New Vistage Malaysia Website

We are pleased to inform that a new Vistage Malaysia website is now officially launched and you are invited to browse the site at www.vistage.com.my. In this first phase, the website has been designed to focus on easy assessability by CEOs and Business Owners worldwide.

Vistage Community Service Project

Vistage Malaysia to help retrenched executives become business owners

Vistage Malaysia has embarked on a community service project to help a selected group of retrenched executives/managers who aspire to start their own business, in line with the government’s call encouraging retrenched employees to go into business.

Selected participants for the project will be placed in a 9-months time-tested Small Business Program where, during the period, they will:

  1. participate in monthly structured meetings
  2. have scheduled one-to-one coaching with experienced coaches who are ex-CEOs and entrepreneurs
  3. learn from experts on relevant business matters
  4. have access to the international online Vistage library for business ideas and best practices. .

A certificate of completion will be awarded to the participants upon completion of the program.

All interested participants for the program must have a minimal qualification of a diploma or degree of any discipline and have at least 3 years of working experience. They will also have to undergo a personal profiling evaluation to assess their aptitude for entrepreneurship.

A group, VSB-2, has been formed and the first meeting will kick off on 2 September 2009. The Group will be chaired by Richard Wong, Chairman of Vistage Malaysia and supported by 6 Chairs, all volunteering their time and expertise over the next 9 months.

Vistage Down Under Chair Conference (Australia)

4 Malaysian Chairs attended the Sydney Downunder 2009 TEC Conference this July 30th to 31st 2009. They were our Chairman & Chief Listener Richard Wong, Regional Chair Lim Kah Hooi, Heah Kok Soon and Kwong Lok Wah. Overall consensus by our Chairs was that there were good take-home values from the Key note speakers as well as from the sharing of best practices by the Aussie Chairs during the Chair breakout sessions, as well as contribution by our Malaysian contingent. Of special interest to some of the Aussie Chairs is our category of Premier Key Members who get 121s with their respective Chairs

Currently serving as a Senior Advisor, Richard Carr leverages his nearly 30 years experience with Vistage as a member, Chair, President, and CEO to work with the Vistage Chair community, executive staff, and affiliates to achieve maximum unity of purpose and effective communications across all matters of strategic importance.

Carr is a West Point graduate and a highly decorated infantry officer with significant command experience in Germany and Vietnam. After receiving his MBA from Pepperdine University, Carr went on to become president and CEO of Sentinel Container Corporation and Engineered Foam Inc., serving in that role for 15 years. For nine of those years, he was a Vistage member and in 1992 he became a Vistage Chair. Carr continued his career with Vistage as its COO in 1998, before being named President and CEO in 2001 where he served until his appointment as Vice Chairman of the Board in 2005.

Vistage HI-TEA Talks

Vistage Malaysia hosted two CEO Tea Talks on 11 June 2009 and 16 June 2009 in Kuala Lumpur and Penang respectively. The topic was “The Current Global Financial Crisis: Its Impact and Implications for Malaysia” by Ms. Tan Siok Choo, Vice President and Editor at Noordin Sopiee & Associates and Visiting Fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS).

The Penang event was jointly hosted with Invest Penang and supported by Penang Development Corporation, Telekom Malaysia and The Star.

Ms. Tan presented on how and why the subprime crisis happened and evolved into a global financial crisis. She further elaborated on the implications of the crisis on East Asia and impact of the crisis in Malaysia.

Ms. Tan concluded her presentation by identifying a potential market in the service sector and some long term investment opportunities.

Overall the tea talks were well received with about 100 participants at each venue.

Finance For Non Financial Managers

25-26 July, 2009 @ Vistage Malaysia by Goh Saw Kee and Yap Soon Hin

Following the resource sessions on “Preparing for the Slowdown” by Goh Saw Kee and supported by Yap Soon Hin early this year, there were requests from members who wanted to learn more about interpreting financial ratios and reports in helping them manage their businesses better.

Hence, a program on “Finance for Non Financial Managers was held on 25 & 26 July. The 2-day program dealt with the aspect of Financial KPIs and provided participants with basic knowledge and understanding of everyday financial reports and how to use them to build a foundation for collecting and reporting business intelligence.

Participants were each given a Certificate of Completion. The session was rated 7.8 for quality of content and 8.2 for take home value.

Vistage Chairs Wanted

DO YOU KNOW ANYONE who is looking for mental challenges as well as being kept up-to-date with the latest management and leadership thinking so as to help other CEOs/business owners grow their businesses?

The person should be an individual who is a former CEO or entrepreneur with wide business experience and the confidence to act as a mentor, coach and counselor for chief executives, managing directors and business owners at the highest level. Vistage Malaysia is always looking for such individuals to be trained and act as Vistage chairs.

A Vistage chair has two major responsibilities: Firstly, to act as a leader of leaders who also facilitates his/her group meetings; and secondly, to meet each of his/her Vistage members every month for a one-on-one business review. Together, the chair and the member identify key issues and opportunities and focus on the most important priorities for actions and growth of the member’s business.
